🎒Welcome Back! Let’s Teach Students How to SIFT!

Welcome back, educators! 🎉


A new school year means new notebooks, new seating charts, new names and faces to remember… and approximately 47,000 new things competing for our students’ attention.


It also means it’s a good time to dust off one of our most important digital literacy skills: figuring out whether the information in front of us deserves our trust. And that’s where SIFT comes in.


What Is SIFT?

Developed by digital literacy expert Mike Caulfield, SIFT is a simple framework for evaluating information online. Rather than asking students to immediately read, analyze, and decide whether a source is “good” or “bad,” SIFT gives them four moves to help them investigate first.


🛑S — Stop

Before diving into an article, video, post, or website, pause.

What do you already know about this source? What is your initial reaction? Are you surprised, angry, excited, or ready to hit “share”?

That reaction matters. Stop before you let the information do the thinking for you.


🕵️‍♀️I — Investigate the Source

Who created this? What do we know about the person, organization, or publication behind it? Students don't need to become investigative journalists every time they encounter a TikTok. But they do need to develop the habit of asking, “Who is behind this information, and what might they know or want me to believe?”


🔎F — Find Better Coverage

Don't rely on one source to tell the whole story. Search for other reputable sources covering the same claim or topic. Does the information hold up elsewhere? Do experts or established news organizations agree? This is especially important when something seems surprising or too good — or too outrageous — to be true.


📖T — Trace Claims, Quotes, and Media to the Original Context

Find the original source. A screenshot might be missing the surrounding conversation. A statistic might have been pulled from a much larger report. A quote might have been shortened, misinterpreted, or completely disconnected from its original context.

Go back to where the information started.


Why SIFT Matters Even More in the Age of AI

SIFT wasn't created specifically for generative AI, but the habits behind it have become even more important. AI can produce a convincing article, image, citation, summary, or social media post in seconds. And because something looks polished doesn't mean it's accurate.


In fact, one of the most important questions we can teach students isn't:

“Was this made by AI?”

It's:

“How do we know this is true?”


That's a much more useful question — whether the information came from a person, a website, a social media post, or a chatbot.

SIFT gives students a process for answering it.


Bringing SIFT Into the Classroom

The beauty of SIFT is that it doesn't have to live in a single “digital citizenship” lesson.


Try it with:

  • A news article in social studies

  • A scientific claim in science

  • A historical photograph

  • A viral social media post

  • A source students found for a research project

  • An AI-generated response

  • A quote used in a persuasive essay

  • An image that seems just a little too perfect


The goal isn't for students to become suspicious of everything they see online. The goal is to help them become curious. Instead of “I believe this because it looks legitimate,” we want students to start thinking:

“Hmm. Let's SIFT this.”

As we head into another school year, SIFT is a great reminder that digital literacy isn't about teaching students to distrust everything they encounter online. It's about giving them the tools to pause, investigate, look around, and trace information back to its source.


And in a world where anyone — or anything — can create convincing information in seconds, those are skills worth practicing.
