A Blueprint for Career-Connected Learning: Ideas We Can Bring Home
As we gear up for our region’s fourth CTE Regional Advisory Convening, I came across two articles that left me feeling inspired - and encouraged. The work we’re doing to strengthen connections between education, industry, and community isn’t happening in isolation. There are models taking shape in other regions that we can learn from, adapt, and make our own.
Indiana’s Partners for Professions and WestNext initiatives offer a helpful blueprint for moving from individual career-connected experiences toward a more coordinated regional approach.
A few ideas especially stood out:
🤝 Create a clear front door for partnership.
Make it easy for educators and industry partners to find one another, share what they need, and get support turning an idea into an experience.
🛠️ Move from connection to co-creation.
Industry engagement can go beyond guest speaking. Partners can help shape projects, provide real-world challenges, offer feedback, host students, and bring authentic context into learning.
🧭 Build a continuum, not a collection of events.
Imagine career-connected learning that grows with students - from early career exploration to workplace exposure, industry-connected projects, mentorship, internships, apprenticeships, and other deeper experiences.
🔄 Make what works repeatable.
When a partnership or experience succeeds in one classroom or community, how can we capture it, share it, and make it easier for others across our five-county region to adapt?
We don’t need to replicate another region’s model. We can learn from what’s working elsewhere while building on the relationships, programs, and momentum already here in the Gorge. That’s what excites me most: we aren’t starting from scratch. We’re connecting the pieces - and building what comes next together.
