Career Readiness in the Age of AI: 3 Ways to Start the School Year

How do we prepare students to work with AI in the careers ahead?

Add one question to your next guest speaker, industry panel, or site visit:
Where are you using AI - and what skills are becoming more important because of it?
Students get a real-world look at how technology is changing their career interests, directly from the people doing the work.
2. Make the Human Skills Visible
Technical skills + AI aren't enough. Communication, critical thinking, adaptability, creativity, and judgment still matter.
Try it: After a project, ask students:
“What did you bring to this work that AI couldn’t?”
It’s a simple way to help students recognize - and articulate - the durable skills they're developing.
3. Let Students Solve a Real Problem With AI
Give students an authentic workplace challenge and let them decide where AI fits.
Try it: Ask:
“Where could AI make this work better, faster, or more effective - and where does human expertise need to lead?”
This shifts students from simply using AI to thinking like problem-solvers who know when, why, and how to use it.

We don't have to predict every AI tool students will encounter. We can prepare them to adapt, ask good questions, solve real problems, work alongside technology, and bring distinctly human skills to the workplace.
